AIRBAG - Is it for your safety? - Part 1

Hello All, more than a year i have not update this blog.. sorry for that.. to busy with other thing... Today i have some time and have an urge to update it.. hee.. hee.. hee.. don't know why...

Well back to the subject, Airbag has been promoted to save your life in car crash?. IS IT RIGHT???.... Many thing has been said but we need to understand the fundamental of it......

Let's explore and see....

Facts :

1. Almost all cars today from small car to large luxury cars have airbag. It is a norm now!. Car without airbag is not attractive to the market anymore.
2. Airbag come in different shape and size - Driver, Passenger, Side, Curtain, Rear, even foot airbag.
3. Standard now is 2 airbag system - Driver and Passenger, others is currently options but will become standard in the future.
4. People believe that airbag will safe their life in car crash.
5. Most of people was not properly informed on how to use the airbag.
6. Most people don't even concern how the airbag work or their car has airbag.. Just turn on the key and drive....

Fundamentals :

1. What is airbag ?
Basically, airbag is just a balloon. Like the normal balloon, which kid is playing only the material is different. When it exploded (open), it will be filled with gas and expanded like we blow into the balloon. Only different is that.. this process happened in a blink of an eye (split second)... very fast for our eyes to see.. what we see after it was opened is that a piece of depleted cloth on top on the steering wheel...

2. What is its main function?
It is for cushioning our body parts during car crash, similar like balloon can be use to cushion our hand or leg if we want to..

3. What does it involved?
In typical airbag system, the following items are required:
a. sensor - to detect the crash event.
b. Electronic control unit (ECU) - the brain of the system to process the information from sensor and decide whether the airbag should fire or not.
c. The airbag it self - to provide balloon to cushion us.
d. Others are the interconnecting parts like wire harness, clock spring, etc.

4. How does it work?
It started when there is a crash. The sensor will detect the crash even and send the signal to the ECU. The ECU will check the signal and decide whether it should ask the airbag unit to fire / open or not. It depend on the severity of the crash. For the non severe crash, the airbag will not open. It will only open for severe crash.

Back to the original question - IS IT FOR YOUR SAFETY?

In general terms, yes, airbag is an effective way to reduce the injury in the crash and safe life compared to without airbag. A lot of study has prove this. But airbag itself can be very dangerous and it must be use correctly. Like other tools we use in our daily life, if use correctly it can save life. This is similar to we use a knife in our kitchen.. Use it wisely, very useful... help us in our daily cooking... use it wrongly, it can kill people.

This is what I think most people are not aware of.. especially lady drivers and childrens..... The key fundamental in safe airbag usage are : 1. USE YOUR SEATBELT (BUCKLE UP!!!). 2. KEEP SOME DISTANCE FROM THE AIRBAG (i.e. steering wheel for driver airbag and dashboard for passenger airbag).

Why i said more on the lady drives is because lady drivers like to sit close to steering wheel. May be they feel more comfortable this way or they want to see the road more... don't know... may be ladies can answer this....

Man, normally due to their longer leg and bigger size tend to sit further. But if some man sit close to the airbag, change your habits...

As a general rule, use of seat belt is a must and keep your chest at least 10 inches from the steering wheel
.

I will explain why and get more technical, in my part 2....

See you all later....

POLICE SAY - BUCKLE UP --> WHY???? (PART 2)

Part 2 :

In this part 2, let me explain scientifically what happened. This this for anyone interested in the mechanic of crash. Otherwise, just remember to "Buckle Up" that enough!!!

In crash science, the importance principle is what we learned in our physic class, which mainly law of physic from our good old friend, Mr. Newton. The Momentum Law.

What is the momentum law? It is basically says : Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

What does it means?... Let go back to the egg and trolley experiment mentioned in part 1. When the egg and the trolley move at some velocity, it will have a momentum (define as "mv"). The momentum will depend on the mass and the speed of the egg and the trolley. The higher the speed the higher the momentum. The higher the momentum the more difficult to stop.

The egg will have the same momentum as the trolley during the motion. When the trolley stop the momentum of the trolley will be zero but the momentum of the egg is still there and this will result in the egg to fly forward and drop down the floor.

1. Egg and trolley momentum = mv
2. Trolley movement = 0 but the egg momentum is still the same.
3. The egg will fly forward due to its momentum and finally hit the floor.

Case of not wearing seat belt :

Similar thing happened when you are involved in an accident. You and your car will have a momentum when your car is moving. But when your car make sudden stop during the impact, the momentum in your body will throw you out of your seat. Your body will bounce back and fort inside the car and hit the hard interior part of the car. This will cause severe injury to your body and internal organ like the egg yolk will spill all over the floor.

Case of wearing seat belt :

On the contrary, if you are wearing seatbelt, during the impact you will be locked to the car. So your body momentum will be same as the car. When the car momentum becoming zero, your body momentum also will become zero. Therefore, you will not be thrown out of your seat as before. This will reduce the risk of injuries...

This what happened...........

Well.... happy driving....... remember too buckle up.... this 2 second of effort can safe your life......

POLICE SAY - BUCKLE UP --> WHY???? (PART 1)

A lot of people is too ignorance about seatbelt. Many people buckle up because of the laws. Afraid that we will get a summon and need to pay may be 300 ringgit. Right!!!!

But the bottom line is that seat belt is too important to ignore. Why? The answer is very simple. It can be explain scientifically or un-scientifically.

Let me explain un-scientifically first in this part 1.

Our body is like an egg. We have a shell (which is a skin), a yolk (which is our internal organ) and a fluid (which is our tissue).

Imagine an egg sitting on a small trolley without being restraint and it is moving forward. Let stop the trolley suddently.

What happen? The egg will fly forward and fell down, hit the floor and broke the shell. Similarly without seat belt being lockup, during crash, our body will fly forward and hit the hard interior part of the car and cause severe injury externally and to our internal organ.

1. Trolley moving 2. Sudden Stop 3. Broken!!!!

If we buckle up, our body will stay with the car, we will not be thrown forward soo fast and the risk of injury is less. Further more in severe crash cases, especially in the rollover cases, it will prevent us from being thrown out of the car.

Off course, there might still be injury depend on the severity of the crash but the risk of severe injury is lesser.

SO BUCKLE UP PEOPLE !!!!!! IT IS NOT THE LAW, IT IS THE LIFE.......... !!!!

WELCOME NOTES

Hello All,

Welcome to my blog.... My blog is dedicate to discussion about crash... It can be any type of crash but since my expertise is on car safety... I can contribute more in this area. I hope that we can share knowledge among us for improve our understanding on this area and take a good precaution to prevent injuries with regards to crash......

Principle of crash is the same for cars, trains, airplane, bump into something, etc but the mechanism is different.

I think that it for now...

Talk to you later........
